Château du Breuil, set in 45 hectares of woodland, can trace its roots back to the 15th century and the tower and moat are still clearly evident from that era.  The remainder of the property was built in the 17th and 18th centuries, with the exception of the 19th century chapel, with its Italian stained glass window, which can be seen in the courtyard.  It was only in 1989 that the house was transformed into a fine hotel tastefully furnished and decorated to create a feeling of elegance and relaxation.

Monday
Château de Pray was named after Geoffroy de Pray in 1244 and the numerous towers bear witness to its past role as a stronghold.  It wasn’t until the Renaissance that it became a residence and in 1631 it came into the possession of the Commissioner of Artillery to the Queen of England.

Tuesday
Château de Reignac was built over the ruins of a former fortress that provided a crossing over the Indre river and today it still bears witness to three separate architectural periods.  In the 15th century the du Fau family built the fortified castle, although only the two round towers which frame the gateway to the garden and the guards room remain from the castle of Jehan du Fau.  Today the chateau is privately owned and has been lovingly restored with each bedroom named after a prominent French person in history.

Wednesday
Château de Beaulieu began life in the 18th century and was originally built as a private country house with ornamental gardens.  In 1976 the building was bought by the Lozay family and transformed into a hotel.  The Lozay family remain the current owners and have continued to develop the hotel into a tranquil and refined haven for relaxing stays with fine cuisine.

Thursday
Manoir de Restigné, originally named la Platerye, began its life mid 17th century.  Both lodges built into the front wall house vaulted chapels.  The main house was extended in the 18th century with both lower wings being added.  The orangery, with its three arches, dates back to the 18th century and was included in the 1971 list of historic monuments.  Underneath the building is a magnificent vaulted wine cellar and also an underground tunnel leading under the road outside the walls of the property.  Unfortunately earth movement prevents access to the tunnel today.  The house has had many owners over the years and even served as an orphanage from 1935 to 1956.  Today the property is privately owned and has been renovated and furnished to exquisite standards.

Friday
Domaine de la Tortinière can trace some its history back to the Roman era with the path following the walls towards the Indre river being part of the ancient ‘Via Romana’ that led from Tours to Montbazon.  The first Tortinière was a rustic country manor built in the 16th century and through the years changed hands a number of times.  During the Second World War, whilst other surrounding chateaux became convalescent homes for injured German soldiers, la Tortinière was made the local head-quarters with a camp for soldiers situated in the gardens.  When the Germans left the property on 30th August 1944 it was noted that in spite of it being a very warm day all the chimneys of the chateau were smoking and it’s believed that compromising evidence was being destroyed.  In 1955 the chateau was opened as a hotel and is still owned by the same family today.  Amongst its many guests over the years have been such celebrities as Audrey Hepburn, Gérard Depardieu and Juliette Binoche.
